Kiln fire bricks porosity is the percentage of pore volume and refractory products' total volume. Kiln fire bricks' pores are divided into two categories: closed in the refractory bricks and not communicated with outside is called closed pores; communicated with outside world and can provide fluid-filled pores called opening pores. In opening pores, pass products' two sides and fluid can go through is called penetrate pores.
The vast majority of Kiln fire bricks pores are open pores, refractory brick porosity can be as small or large from near 0% to 80%. Apparent porosity dense products in general 10% to 28%. It affects almost all properties of refractory products, in particular the compressive strength, thermal conductivity, slag resistance and thermal shock resistance. Porosity increases, strength decreases, which is not only due to the solid cross-sectional area decreases causing actual stress increases. More important is porosity becoming material’s defects can cause stress concentration and decrease. Effect of coarse pores is more significant. Reduce Kiln fire bricks porosity is beneficial to improve refractory material’s refractoriness under load and high temperature creep resistance.
